UAE Implements Enhanced Standards for Worker Accommodation

New Regulations Aim to Elevate Worker Welfare

The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has rolled out a comprehensive set of revised standards for labor accommodation. These new directives are designed to significantly enhance the quality of life, health, safety, and general well-being of workers across the nation. The updated requirements, detailed in a guide published by MOHRE, address various facets of worker housing, including living conditions, medical provisions, internet access, recreational options, and overall accommodation management.

These standards are applicable to employers who provide housing for their workforce, specifically targeting companies that employ 50 or more workers earning a monthly salary of AED 1,500 or less. Key aspects of these new rules include:

Improved Sleeping Quarters

Mandatory Free Internet Access

Management of labor accommodations is now required to offer free internet connectivity throughout their facilities. This provision aims to enable workers to maintain contact with their families, access crucial online services, and conduct digital transactions.

Enhanced Hygiene and Safety Protocols

Access to Essential Amenities

On-Site Medical Services

Promoting Recreation and Physical Activity

Accommodation management is now required to organize recreational activities during official holidays. Workers must also have access to designated areas for physical activity, with larger accommodation complexes needing to provide sports courts.

Reinforced Health and Safety Measures

Operators must comply with Civil Defence requirements, ensuring functional fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency exits, and established evacuation procedures. Smoking is restricted to designated areas, and security guards and supervisors must be available around the clock.
